Three Wairarapa operators and the Hotel Grand Windsor in Auckland have all been awarded the Gold Sustainable Tourism Business Certification from Qualmark New Zealand.

Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre and Tui Brewery, both located on SH2 in the Wairarapa, and Tranzit Group, which is based in the region, have all achieved the award. Pukaha Mount Bruce and Tui Brewery are showcased in Destination Wairarapa’s latest promotional video (above).

The businesses were evaluated on operational practises, environment and culture, social and people, and health and safety.

“Wairarapa continues to attract more visitors and Qualmark’s latest ratings show several of our operators are demonstrating exceptional sustainable tourism practices that deliver outstanding customer experiences and we are very proud of that,” said Destination Wairarapa general manager David Hancock.

Rosie Rogers, from The Experience Collective which manages Tui Brewery, said: “We’ve reduced our waste to landfill by 75% through reviewing our recycling programme, worked hard to combat seasonality through conferencing, Tui Express and our Mangatainoka motors events and given back to the community through our Plants and Pints project.”

“We’re also developing our culture, people and performance through a range of forward-thinking initiatives. We’ve listened to feedback from our guests and we’re always measuring and improving,” said Rogers.

In Auckland, Hotel Grand Windsor was relaunched as a boutique five-star hotel in October last year after extensive renovations that “afforded a unique level of luxury”, said CPG Hotels Group operations manager, Ronnie Ronalde.

Ronalde added the hotel had its “eyes firmly on the future, ensuring we adhere to the environmentally friendly, sustainable business practices that customers demand these days”.

Gregg Anderson

Gregg Anderson has been appointed the new general manager of Tourism New Zealand’s quality assurance company, Qualmark.

Anderson has been acting head of the organisation since the resignation of former general manager Cameron Lawrence in March.

He joined Qualmark in 2016 as a tourism business advisor conducting assessments of NZ accommodation and activity providers.

Prior to joining the organisation, Anderson held a number of senior posts for Tourism New Zealand including general manager of Europe and Americas.

“During this period he assisted in repositioning Tourism New Zealand’s stakeholder plans and growth markets following the Global Financial Crisis, oversaw the opening of the Latin American office, and managed the US side of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings partnership,” said TNZ in a statement.

On his return to NZ in 2016, he led the multi-agency Project Palace, which aims to address shortfalls in hotel accommodation, before joining Qualmark.

“[Gregg] is highly regarded in the industry for his strategic marketing nous, business acumen, and passion for sustainable tourism,” said Sue Parcell, Qualmark director and TNZ’s chief financial officer.

“He has been a true asset to the team as a Tourism Business Advisor and we look forward to the future evolution of Qualmark with Gregg at the helm.”

Auckland-based Qualmark has been going through a period of significant development over the past year with new quality criteria introduced, which included an emphasis on sustainability, and an extensive review of the organisation’s work conducted.

However, it has faced criticism from some operators in the industry for some of the changes and the cost and quality of its certification process.

TNZ’s preference of using only Qualmark operators on its famil, travel, trade and media work has also attracted criticism from some non-Qualmark operators.

Anderson begins the general manager role on 2 July.
