Dykman and Tash McGill’s online learning platform for the tourism and hospitality industries launched its core 24-module curriculum last week aimed at professionals from entry-level to senior. The initiative went live in April.

“We talk so much about attracting the right type of visitor to build the future of tourism that New Zealand aspires to,” said Dykman, who also owns tourism marketing agency Maverick Digital.

“I’d love to change the conversation to how we are delivering the type of tourism experiences that attracts that type of visitor. And delivery obviously comes with workforce development, and that’s what Grow Tourism is in a nutshell.”

Grow Tourism has onboarded 100 learners since its launch in April, with a selection of free modules and subscription options for individuals and a tiered pricing plan for groups starting at $49 per person per month for 4-24 learners, and reducing to $41 per person per month for large group.

“The modules are across entry, middle and senior level of all of our high-value tourism pillars, so it’s a really complete learning experience,” Dykman said.

“This is just the beginning. We’ll be adding modules across all facets of tourism and hospitality as we go with a couple of modules dropping every month to re-engage learners and make it clear that the curriculum is growing, that it’s not just static.”

Modules take 2-4 hours to complete and primarily use case studies supported by organisations such as Tourism Industry Aotearoa, Hobbiton Movie Set, Ziptrek Ecotours, Kapiti Island Nature Tours, Redwoods Treewalk, Rotorua Canopy Tours, Waitangi Treaty Grounds, and iFLY Queenstown.

Industry leaders including Hospitality New Zealand chief executive Steve Armitage, Tourism Talent’s Jason Hill, and former TIA boss Chris Roberts also lead modules.

McGill said the modules were designed with industry best practice in mind and the curriculum built around case studies of leading operators.

“We’re staying closely connected to some of our best-performing and best-operating tourism and hospitality businesses,” she said.

“The case study approach that we have and the way that we’re working with those best practices is really what gives Grow Tourism its unique credibility within the industry space. It doesn’t have to follow the same linear kind of journey that traditional education or training might follow.

“We’re able to kind of extract the goodness and the gold from our best-performing businesses and then share that directly with the rest of the industry so that everybody is able to level up.”

The Government said it would provide the funding for training and education providers to help create employment pathways in regional New Zealand, and support the recovery from the Covid-19 crisis.

“By investing in skills and training for our young people, we can break down some of those barriers and support our rangatahi to succeed in a challenging environment,” said employment minister Willie Jackson.

“This will be crucial for towns such as Rotorua and Kaikōura, where the effects of Covid-19 will be particularly difficult due to loss of income from international tourism.”

The funding package consisted of $11.62m from Te Ara Mahi, the Provincial Growth Fund’s employment, skills and capability fund, and $3.17m from He Poutama Rangatahi, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s youth training and employment pathway fund.

“New Zealand’s economic recovery will be largely driven by the regions and they need a well-trained workforce and sustainable employment opportunities to get their economies moving,” said regional economic development minister Shane Jones.

“The challenge is one we were already addressing but it has been scaled up in response to the impact of Covid-19. This Government has put in place a wide range of measures to support regional recovery and secure Kiwi jobs. We need to ensure those who need help into skilled work receive it.”

The funding covered projects in Canterbury, Manawatū-Whanganui, Hawke’s Bay, Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Te Tai Tokerau.

The course, Hospo Safe, was in two completely online modules, each taking between two and three hours. It had been designed so that new staff could be trained before they started work.

“Given the situation that many of our sector employers are in due to Covid-19, we are releasing this at a price that only covers our IT platform costs,” said Andrew McSweeney, ServiceIQ chief executive.

Available until 31 May, the training cost $15 per person.

The proposed initiatives, included in a business case which was released today at TRENZ, are grouped into three inter-related categories comprising ‘perceptions’, ‘bridging’ and ‘experience’.

They include things such as the creation of a knowledge hub, communications campaign, school engagement programme and improving education right through to networking and mentoring.

It is currently seeking funding “from government and other sources”.

TIA said that the package builds on the range of workforce development activities already underway across the industry, and aims to help attract the estimated 40,000 new employees needed to support tourism growth over the next five years.

Last year, TIA partnered with ATEED to undertake perceptions research to better understand what young Kiwis think about working in tourism and who influences their thinking.

This research offered new insights for industry employers and educators so they can attract more young people and effectively retain and develop them into sustainable career pathways. It found that parents and teachers are enormously influential in career choice.

Tourism jobs are also perceived as having average pay and being short-term.

TIA chief executive, Chris Roberts, said: “The perceptions research provided the basis for our business case. After extensive consultation with industry members around the country, we are excited to launch this package of eight initiatives today.”

“This package has the potential to make a real difference to our industry’s future.

“Other industries are well advanced in programmes to attract talent and tourism can’t afford to be left behind. By taking a coordinated approach, we can become more competitive in attracting the talent we need to continue offering world-class visitor experiences,” he added.

Other work already being done by the sector to attract and retain talent include the YoungTEC professional development programme and the Go With Tourism programme launched earlier this year by Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED).

Focused on the Auckland region, this new job platform at http://www.gowithtourism.co.nz aims to match young job-seekers with quality employers within the tourism industry.

It also provides information about the variety of roles available in tourism.
