Auckland and Wellington airports have been added to the list of locations of interest in the latest Covid-19 outbreak because of flights taken by Covid cases.
The airports were among 327 locations now listed as community case numbers reached 107, with 35 new detections added today. Of the new cases, 33 were in Auckland and two in Wellington.
The Ministry of Health said the domestic terminal at Auckland was listed from 3.30pm to 4.30pm on Thursday 19 August, while Wellington airport was listed from 5.30pm to 6.15pm the same day, after an infected person was on flight NZ443 from Auckland to Wellington.
An infected person was also on flight NZ445 from Auckland to Wellington on Sunday 15 August, and Auckland domestic terminal was listed as a location of interest on that day from 4pm to 5pm with Wellington domestic terminal listed from 6.20pm to 7pm.
The total number of locations reached 327 by 1pm today, with the number of contacts tallying at more than 10,000. Many of the locations were potential super-spreader events such as church assemblies, balls, bars, business award ceremonies, or university halls or lectures.
SkyCity’s Auckland casino had around 1000 patrons and 240 staff present during a visit on Saturday 14 August between 1.17am and 3.08am.
Some locations of interest were essential services, with more than two dozen supermarket stores having to close for cleaning, sending hundreds of staff home for self-isolation.
Contact tracing resources were believed to be operating at capacity and the Ministry of Health said it was bringing in extra people to assist.
